Obituary of Betty Jo Clement

Betty Jo Clement of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, passed from this life on December 13, 2016. She was born in Henryetta, Oklahoma on August 1, 1925, to parents Earl and Mary Gladys Hermes. The family moved to Sapulpa in 1928, where she graduated from Sapulpa High School. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1946 from the University of Oklahoma. While at OU, she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, and met her future husband of 61 years, D.A. "Clem" Clement, also a 1946 OU graduate. Following graduation, Betty worked for WKY in Oklahoma City, and then traveled abroad with her husband during his tenure with the U.S. Air Force. Upon Clem's discharge from active duty, the couple moved back to Sapulpa in 1960, where they made their home for the next 50 years. In 1965, Betty returned to the University of Oklahoma and obtained her Masters Degree in Social Services and then embarked on a 30 year career with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. She was an active participant in her church life including various social and community organizations. An avid Sooner fan, she and Clem had season tickets to OU football games for more than 50 years. A highlight for her was being honored on the football field at Gaylord-Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium flanked by her two sons, to be honored with the “Sooner Salute” for her longtime loyalty as a season ticket holder during the OU-Missouri game in 2011. She is survived by her two sons, Steve Clement (Janet) and Cliff Clement (Sue), as well as grandchildren, Matt Clement (Carolyn), Kristen Clement Ella (Matt), Ashley Mackey (Brian) and great-grandchildren Skyler, Nicole and Savannah Mackey, and her brother Dick Hermes of Sapulpa.
