Obituary of WILLIAM OWEN

Please share a memory of WILLIAM to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
William O. "Bill" Owen, 87, of Glenpool died at his home on July 31, 2009, surrounded by loving family.  Bill will be laid to rest at Green Hills Cemetery in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, officiated by Tommy Howell, State Chaplain of the Oklahoma Disabled American Veterans.  Internment will follow at Green Hill Memorial Gardens.   Bill Owen was born in Clarksville, Arkansas to William Riley Owen and Della Marie Middleton on July 8, 1922.  He attended school in Clarksville, Arkansas and Berryhill, Oklahoma.  He married Ila Mae Tipton in Sapulpa, Oklahoma and they remained married for the last sixty years, until his death.  Bill leaves behind a rich, proud legacy in his family.  He was father of eight children, William Owen, Jr., Gene Owen, Susie Daniels, Leona Taylor, Danny Owen, Eloise Owen, Beverly Jones, and Carolyn Griffin, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.   Bill served honorably during World War II and was decorated for his service in the 98th Signal Battalion of the U.S. Army.  After leaving the service, he was a lifetime member of, and was actively involved in, the Disabled American Veterans.  Also accomplished in his chosen civilian career, Bill achieved much success and received great joy from his work driving a truck across our vast and great country.  He received honors and was awarded for over one million miles of safe, accident-free driving.  Retiring from the big rigs, Bill went on to operate a successful pilot truck operation, escorting and ensuring the safe passage of many oversized loads across the roads of America.  His business became a model for many others and for state regulations in the field.  He enjoyed his family and the great outdoors, often engaging in outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, and camping.  His loving family will miss his patriarchal leadership and his unique sense of humor, but his spirit will carry on in their hearts and through their memories.
