Celebrating the Life of Lynette “Lyn” Betterton

Lynette Kaye “Lyn” Betterton passed from this life and into the open arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at Clarehouse in Tulsa at age 64. She was surrounded by her family and friends. Cancer took her life but could not crush her sweet spirit or faith.

Lyn was the first of two children born to her adoring parents, James L. Rush, Jr. and Virginia Evans-Rush at Bartlett Memorial Hospital on October 22, 1954, delivered by Dr. Walter Cale. She knew from an early age that she wanted a medical career and thus became a candy-striper at age fourteen. Lyn graduated from Sapulpa High School in 1972 and earned an Associates Degree in Nursing in 1975 and proudly began working as an LPN, Licensed Practical Nurse. Prior to becoming an LPN,she worked as a Certified Nurse Assistant and as a Unit Secretary at Hillcrest. Lyn also taught the Health Occupations class at Sapulpa Central Tech and CNA classes at Oakdale Manor in Sand Springs.  She married husband, Cecil Betterton in 1975, and they had one child, Tanner James Betterton in 1977. Lynette’s nursing career spanned 4 decades, during which time, she met many people and worked in many facets of nursing. She especially had a heart for geriatrics. Lyn excelled at “care-giving” both at home and work.” Nurse Lyn” was employed by the Muscogee-Creek Nation at the Sapulpa Indian Health Center. She always enjoyed getting up and going to work at the clinic, because she loved her job, the doctors, co-workers, and patients. Lyn was blessed to have an amazing work environment, and she knew it! She loved and appreciated every one of the SIHC staff and considered them her precious “second family.”

Lyn will forever be remembered for many things including her warm smile and great sense of humor. She will also be remembered for being a loyal friend and excellent listener! She was the original “Pioneer Woman” who enjoyed cooking for others, hosting many large family gatherings, and decorating for the holidays. She also enjoyed watching HGTV, the Food Network, Wheel of Fortune, and every single episode of Law and Order. Lyn was always punctual, practical, a planner, and problem-solver. She was a long-time member of Victory Christian Center in Tulsa, and also attended Beams of Light Church in Sapulpa. To know Lyn, was to love Lyn. She was kind and generous to others. For someone who was quiet and unassuming, she made a great and lasting impression on everyone she met. Lyn was our “Earth Angel.” Because Lyn was so loved in return by others, she had many nicknames which were terms of endearment, one of which was “Lynster.” She had two canine companions, Sophie and Rosie Betterton and two “fur baby nephews”, the infamous ‘Puppy Brothers”, Louie and Cubby Luker. She enjoyed shopping at craft fairs, flea markets, and antique malls and taking road trips to Joplin, Branson, and Nashville. She attended many plays, musicals, and concerts, and loved cheering for the Tulsa Oilers, her favorite hockey team.

Lynette is survived by her husband of 44 years, Cecil “Hank” Betterton, mother, Virginia Rush-Graham, sister, LuAnn Luker, cherished nephew, Logan Luker, brother-in-law, Mark Luker, stepsons, Andrew and Jason Betterton, grandchildren, Grace and Alice Betterton, mother-in-law, Beulah Coleman, and a host of extended friends and family, who were near and dear to her heart including, Linda Flood, Mazolla Johnson, Michael and Cindy Hughes, Linda Way, and Paula, Pete, and Clay Huls. She was preceded in death by her son, Tanner Betterton, father, James L. Rush, Jr., stepfather, Estel Graham, grandparents, Sol and Rosalie Evans, Lennie and Albert Lairmore, and several beloved aunts and uncles. Lyn’s family takes comfort knowing that Lyn is now whole, reunited and rejoicing with the saints in her heavenly home and wearing an enormous crown.
