Obituary of Lindal Jerrel Hughes
Lindal Jerrel (L J) Hughes was born on April 5, 1930 in Kiefer, Oklahoma. He departed this life on February 11, 2019. He was the only son and child of John Arthur Hughes and Ruth Christina Shobe Hughes.
L J went to first through fourth grade in Kiefer. Then he went to fifth and sixth in Bixby, because his dad was transferred from an oil company in Kiefer to one in Bixby. After our entry in WWII began, his dad went to work at a defense plant in Lima, Ohio. He helped make war tanks. The family lived there for one year. His mother’s family lived in Lima as well and he attended 7th grade in Ohio before moving back to Bixby for eighth grade. They moved several more times due to his father’s work. The family leased forty acres on a farm west of Bixby for one year in 1944. His dad later ran the Texaco station in Kellyville. L J attended one semester in Bixby during the ninth grand and then moved to Kellyville for the remainder of the year. In the fall of 1945, the family moved to Santa Maria, California where they lived until September 1948 when they returned to Bixby.
After graduating from high school L J began work in the oil fields. He was baptized on February 25, 1951 and became a member of the General Assembly and Church of the First Born. From March of 1951 to 1953 he served in the U.S. Army. Upon completion of basic training at Ft. Mead, Maryland he was sent to Korea. When he returned home, he went to work for Douglas Aircraft. He began dating Jean Marie Potter after returning home and the couple was married on June 26, 1954. They moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma and had 2 sons, Lindal and Jay. In 1963 they moved to Jenks. The couple divorced and L J moved into his parent’s home in Sapulpa in 1970. L J was now working at Rockwell International, where he retired in 1992.
L J was a loving father and grandfather. He loved going to his church and visiting his classmates from Bixby. He is survived by his 2 sons, Lindal Hughes and wife Leanna and Jay Hughes, all of Wagoner, OK. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren; Angie, Chris, Lanie and Chelsey as well as 5 great-grandchildren.
