Alfred Leroy Mathews Obituary

Alfred Leroy Mathews was born on May 16, 1929, as the third of nine children to George and Emma Mathews in Bristow, Oklahoma.

Alfred was a proud Army Veteran who honorably served his country in the Korean War. He met and married the love of his life, Margaret J. Mathews; to this union 5 children were born, Alfreda, Charles, David, Stacey, and Danny.

He was an avid outdoorsman. He was known lovingly among his siblings as King Alfred, and he was often found caring for his land, family and community.

Alfred served his community by proudly serving as a Deacon at Macedonia Baptist Church, a member of Fidelity Lodge #136 of Sapulpa, and he helped establish the NAACP chapter in Sapulpa. He also worked for many years as a sheriff’s deputy for Creek County and assisted with recovery efforts of the 1960 tornado that struck Sapulpa.

Alfred was a stern, yet loving father and grandfather, creating four generations of love. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his siblings. Whether by plane or car, Alfred made an almost annual trip across the country to spend time with his brothers and sisters. He was present for births, birthdays, graduations and celebrations of all kinds for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren alike. Paw Paw Al shared a special connection and bond with each generation. Often participating in school events, Alfred could often be found standing silently, proudly on the sidelines and court sides with his cap in hand.

He was a loving, honest, and humble man. He was a wonderful husband, an exceptional father, a remarkable grandfather and wonderful brother, cousin, and friend. Alfred dedicated his life to the Lord, his family, and helping his community. It is with much love, honor, and pride that you celebrate his life with us.

Alfred is preceded in death by his beloved wife Margaret J. Mathews, son Danny E. Mathews, brothers George, Herman, Ervin, and Lawrence Mathews, and sisters Arlene Bobo and Ernestine D. Moore.

He is survived by his children Alfreda of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Charles and wife Rita of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, David and wife Sue of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, and Stacy of Tulsa, Oklahoma, siblings Erma S. Gratts of Inglewood, California, and Charles D. Mathews and wife Virginia of San Antonio, Texas, 14 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and special friends and family.
