Chester William Monroe, known lovingly by many names — Whompy, Bill, Billy, Poppy, and Wewowo (Cherokee for “Little Pigeon”) — passed away peacefully at his home in Collinsville, Oklahoma, on the morning of November 10, 2025, surrounded by love and memories that will last a lifetime.
Born on November 24, 1952, in Collinsville, Oklahoma, Chester was the son of Chet and Katherine Monroe. He grew up right where his roots ran deepest, attending Foyil Schools and continuing his education at Northeastern State University.
On August 18, 1975, he married the love of his life, Marlene Sue, in Claremore, Oklahoma. Together, they shared over 50 years of marriage — a lifetime of laughter, love, and the kind of good-natured stubbornness that only makes a bond stronger.
A hard worker all his life, Chester spent many years with Darling International, but his heart was always happiest when he was doing what he loved — driving, fishing, playing billiards, gaming, eating well, and enjoying a good drink. His humor, wit, and ability to make others laugh were unmatched. There were far too many stories to count and too many good memories to list — he lived fully, and he lived well.
Chester was proudly non-denominational in faith and lived by kindness, humor, and love. When asked about his disappointments, he would have said “my four children” — before laughing and saying, “Just kidding — nothing, no regrets.”
His greatest achievements were his four wonderful children and, as he’d proudly say with a grin, “the ability to put up with Marlene for over 50 years.”
He is survived by his devoted wife, Marlene Monroe of Collinsville; his children Stanley, Shelli, Consuela, and Natasha; twelve grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren who will carry on his spirit and stories for generations. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a countless number of friends who were blessed to know him. His loyal dog, Bear, never left his side and will forever be part of his story.
Chester was preceded in death by his parents, Chet and Mattie Monroe; Katherine Case and Roy Casey; his brother, Butch Monroe; his daughter-in-law, Annet; his son-in-law, Dee; and many other beloved family members.
Though his humor and presence could fill every room, it’s the love he gave that will be remembered most. Chester lived without regrets, laughed without limits, and loved without end.
