Obituary of Mattie Lou Thomas
Mattie Lou (Campsey) Thomas, 96, of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, went to be with her Lord on January 18, 2018. She was born on May 9, 1921, in Montague County, Texas to Thomas and Jewel (Rector) Campsey. She lettered in volleyball her senior year and graduated in 1938 from Goodlett High School in Goodlett, Texas. In 1945, at the age of 24, she moved to Lubbock, Texas, where she went to work for Borden Ice Cream. That same year she met her husband, Lewis Thomas, and they married on December 1st. Mattie and Lewis had 4 children, Mary Ann Thomas-Slaton, Carolyn Thomas-Belk, Bonnie Thomas-Storts, and Raymond Thomas. In 1961, Mattie and Lewis moved the family to Sapulpa, Oklahoma where she went to work for Bartlett-Collins when, in 1983, she retired after 22 years of faithful service. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church for over 50 years.
Mattie’s greatest accomplishment and legacy were her children. She often spoke of how blessed she was to have her family. Mattie had a lot of interests, but none brought her more joy than watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren do what they love. Whether it be playing a sport or singing in the school play, she was always their biggest fan. She was an avid fisherman and loved to crochet. She was also a fantastic cook and passed many of her wonderful recipes on to the younger generations who are still trying to make them taste like hers. You could always walk in to her home and find your favorite – whether it was her cookies, apple sauce cake, lemon jello cake, banana pudding or one of her delicious pies. She was also passionate about her favorite teams. She loved to cheer on the St Louis Cardinals, OKC Thunder and the Dallas Cowboys. She even had her picture made with Albert Pujols!
Mattie was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Thomas, parents, Thomas and Jewel Campsey-Knotts, brother, Boyd Campsey, and sister, Doris Campsey-Patterson. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Slaton, of Tulsa, daughter, Carolyn Belk and her husband, Tony, of Sapulpa, Bonnie Storts and her husband, Bruce of Guthrie, and son, Raymond Thomas of Sapulpa.
