Obituary of VIRGIL MORTON

Virgil "Junior" Morton was born March 23, 1925 in Bristow, Oklahoma to Rufus and Jessie Morton of Gypsy, Oklahoma and passed away on August 7, 2013 at Claremore, Oklahoma. Junior grew up on a farm in Gypsy attending school there and working the family farm until his entry into the Army in July of 1943 where he served our great naton until February 1946 with a qualification as a rifle-marksman. Junior earned an Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with one Bronze Star, he also earned a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with another Bronze Star, a Good Conduct Ribbon and a Victory Medal during his service. After leaving the Army he returned to farming where he met the love of his life Loma Marie Dervin while picking cotton. Loma and Junior were married on March 11, 1950 settling in Depew, Oklahoma, raising their family of one son and three daughters until moving to Sapulpa in 1960 where they lived until Loma's death in July of 2009 after 59 years of marriage. To support his family Junior worked as a roustabout in the oilfields in the Sapulpa-Bristow area until obtaining employment as a welder for Yuba Heat and Transfer until his retirement in 1990. Junior also had a love of country music and performed at many local venues playing bass guitar with several different local country and western musicians. He was an avid hunter and fisherman in his leisure time. Junior is preceded in death by his parents Rufus and Jessie Morton, brother Cecil Morton, grandson Arron Morton, great-grandson Martin Nail and his loving wife Loma Marie Morton. He is survived by his only son Jimmy Morton, his three daughters, Pamela Green and husband John, Penny Newman and Dale of Tulsa, Tammy Simpson and husband Richard of Bixby, Oklahoma, 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Junior is survived by one brother Billy Morton and wife Nancy, sisters Louise Moore and Wanda Pilant and husband Delmer and many nephews and nieces and a host of friends.
