Mildred Barnes was born November 30, 1922 to Carl and Lucinda Schubert in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and passed away at home on Friday, May 9, 2014. Mildred's family moved to Glenpool in 1923 and she graduated from Glenpool High School in 1941. Mildred enlisted in the Navy in 1943. She served 2 ½ years and worked in the weather office. She is a WWII veteran. Mildred married Vern Barnes in 1945. They traveled many places during the 24 years Vern was in the Navy. Millie was a very unique lady. She loved doing acrobatics for the Admiral's Staff. She learned to fly a plane and got her pilot's license. She and Vern were members of the Akdar Shriners in Corpus Christi, Texas. They performed in many parades. They often made socks for the children to wear at the Shriner's Hospital. After her time in the Navy Millie worked for and retired from Civil Service. Millie dedicated her life to God while on a retreat with her best and dearest friend, Rose Cotner. She enjoyed weekly Bible study. Her cooking skills fed them physically while Marvin Ellis fed them spiritually. In her last few years she wanted to fill her bucket list. With the help of her friends, James and Donna Shimp, she was able to do it. They went to Mount Rushmore, the Royal Gorge, Yellowstone, Niagra Falls, Utah and Michigan. Mille was a member of the Tulsa Indian Club and Daughters of the Nile. Millie was preceded in death by her parents; husband Vern; and brother Clive and his wife Betty Schubert. She is survived by a host of friends and loved ones.
