Obituary of Earl Leon Somers

Earl Leon Somers, 51 of Sapulpa, Oklahoma passed away from this life on July 25, 2018 in Tulsa at the Clarehouse Hospice Home under the care of Emerald Hospice, after a brave 8 ½ year battle with Colon Cancer.

Earl “The Squirrel” was born June 27, 1967 in Altus, Oklahoma to John Larry and Sandra Lee (Cheesman) Somers.

Earl graduated from Glencoe High School with the class of 1985.

After high school, Earl joined the US Air Force where he completed 10 years bravely serving his country. His specialty was Tactical Aircraft Maintenance Technician and was a journeyman on F-16 and F-117. His military service included 2 tours in Korea, Saudi Arabia, Texas, Georgia, North Dakota, New Mexico and California. He served proudly during Operation Desert Shield/Storm.

After his service in the Air Force, Earl became a truck driver.  He loved driving across the country and was able to visit just about every state. While on the road, he enjoyed sampling fine dining options, such as Weinersnitchel, Fuddruckers, and just about anywhere that could make him a double bacon cheeseburger.

Earl was a passionate Star Wars and Star Trek fan and enjoyed attending as many conventions as he was able to.  He often took pride in donning the attire of his favorite characters and providing photo ops for fellow fans.

He was a lover of music, comic books, and classic cars, especially “Red Leader”, his 1978 Firebird.  He was an avid reader of US History facts, science fiction, and just about any book about aliens and extraterrestrial events.

Earl enjoyed spending time at family gatherings, visiting with family, and eating the all the amazing home-cooked food.  By far, his favorite holiday was 4th of July, Earl loved putting on spectacular Firework displays for his family and friends.  Earl was like a kid in a candy store when it came to fireworks, the louder the bang, the more he enjoyed it.

Earl met the love of his life, Robin Lee Lazarowicz, in 1999 on New Year’s Eve. Earl and Robin had a whirlwind romance and were married on October 06, 2001 at Sunnybrook Christian Church surrounded by friends and family.  Earl and Robin had a collaborative and caring relationship. It was based on mutual support and a deep love for each other.

Earl cherished his wife of nearly 17 years and his 2 beautiful children, Samantha and Ben. Earl's children were the pride and joy of his life. Despite the health effects of cancer treatments, he would always make sure that he attended their events and activities.  He loved seeing his son playing baseball and his daughter in her many Color Guard events. The legacy of Earl's kind spirit, passion for Star Wars and Star Trek, love of reading, and zest for life will live on through them.

Earl was preceded in death by his grandparents, John Jacob and Rhoda Mae Somers, C.W and Eva Cheesman, uncles, David Leon Dwinell, Daniel Earl Somers, and Gary Wayne Somers, and cousins, Aaron Dwinell, and Tommy Harrington.
