Obituary of Darlene Van Pelt

Darlene (Dikeman) Van Pelt, 80, of Talala, passed away Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019 after a brief battle with cancer.

Darlene was born July 22, 1938 in Oologah, to parents Ben Henry Dikeman and Emili Helen Whisenhunt-Dikeman. She graduated from Oologah High School and earned a degree from Draughon’s Business School in Tulsa. Darlene married H.B. Van Pelt III July 25, 1963 (he passed in 2000). They lived on the family ranch in Talala, raising Hereford Cattle and registered Quarter Horses. Darlene loved her animals and showed it by feeding them extremely well. She loved to laugh, loved jokes, loved friends and family and loved visiting with all of them. Since she was a young child, you could always find her on the back of a horse…be it pleasure riding, competitive barrel racing, working cattle, showing horses or riding in parades.

Darlene worked at Tulsa University, Hillcrest Medical, Phillips Petroleum, Chester’s Western Store, Hesston Manufacturing and Drysdale’s Western Wear.

She loved watching OSU, OU, and Mississippi State college football and basketball…big on the OU Sooners. She also loved OKC Thunder and Russell Westbrook and watched a lot of PBR on TV.

Troopers with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol might tell you that Darlene enjoyed driving. She had quite a lead foot on the roads of Rogers County. LOL.

Darlene loved her children Jon and Vicky and adored her granddaughter Emili. Later came two great grandchildren, Journey Nevaeh and Carleigh Rose, bringing her even more joy.

Darlene is survived by siblings Dorris Louise-Dikeman Riddle (John Riddle), and Jimmie Marie Dikeman-Brown (Joe Brown), all four of Starkville, MS; and Robert (Bob) Myskey (Tary Myskey), of Nice, CA; children Victoria (Vicky) Van Pelt-Jerome (Todd Jerome), of Stillwater; Jon Van Pelt (Sherry Van Pelt), of Talala; granddaughter Emili Van Pelt (fiancé Cameron Priddy), of Coweta; and great grandchildren Journey Van Pelt and Carleigh Priddy.

She is also survived by cousin Sharon Smith (Norman Smith), Oologah; aunt Eldora Siekman and daughter Debbie Finch; nieces and nephews Darrell Dikeman (Paige), Eufaula: Cindy Seckinger (Jimmy), Stillwell, GA; Dennis Miller (WaeSun), Rockledge, FL; Paul Brown (Kathy), Starkville, MS; Stephanie Baker, Indianola, MS; Barbara Foster (Jeff), Starkville, MS; Carolyn Abadie (Ben), Starkville, MS; and Ricky Swenson (Elizabeth), Tomboll, TX; and numerous other extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings Darrell Philip (Tom) Dikeman, Margie (Pake) Dikeman-Brown and Sally Ann Dikeman–Pilipovich; and infant son Dan Van Pelt.

Lifelong friends included Mildred Jane Humes–Patterson, Tulsa; Earlene Walker–Loudon, Sallisaw; Maggie Jo Hall–Hargrove, Oologah; and Norma Jean Thompson (deceased).

Darlene’s visitation is 4-7 p.m. Monday, January 28th at Green Hill Funeral Home, 9901 Owasso Expressway in Owasso. The funeral service is 11 a.m. Tuesday January 29th at First Baptist Church of Talala, 203 Oak St. with Rev. Richard Ayers officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Talala.
