Obituary of Hazel Inez Austin
Hazel Inez Austin, age 89, was born to Albert and Ethel Blake in Smithville, Oklahoma on March 15, 1930, and passed from this life July 1, 2019, in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Hazel had five brothers: E.J., Kenneth, George, Oscar, and Don Blake, and one sister, Sue Keiss. She married Johnie Lee Austin on October 6, 1950. They had two children, Phillip Austin and Barbara Bullinger.
Hazel was a homemaker and provided childcare for several families throughout the years. She was known for her clean house, “So clean you could eat off the floors”. She loved to move furniture, change curtains and bedspreads, and paint the rooms in her house to create new looks. The family has joked that there is so much paint on the walls of the house that it is reduced in size by several square feet. She was a good cook, especially fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, homemade bread, and fried pies. Her home was never without a pie, cake or sweet of some kind. Hazel was a Christian and took Phillip and Barbara to church every Sunday. She attended North Heights Freewill Baptist Church, Westside Freewill Baptist Church, and Southside Christian Church in Sapulpa with each church being closer to her home until she was not physically able to attend.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Johnie Austin; parents Albert and Ethel Blake; brothers E.J., Kenneth, George, Oscar, and Don Blake; and neighbor/friend Shirley Wideman. Hazel is survived by her son Phillip Austin and wife Kay of Sapulpa; daughter Barbara Bullinger and husband Steve of Sapulpa; sister Sue Keiss and husband Vernon of Watson, Oklahoma; grandchildren Curtis Austin, Matthew Austin, Erin Stephens, Angie Anglin, Robin Carson, Tori Whitecotton, Tiffany Farrow, and Jeff Bullinger; 17 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; beloved dog Spanky; and close friends Dee Campbell, Donzella Hoover, and JoGail Buie.
Memorial services are pending.
The family wishes to give thanks to Physicians Choice Hospice. Also, a special thank you is given to Hazel’s niece Donna Blake, for being there for Hazel and the family when they needed it most.
Hazel is free of pain and confusion, walking upright and tall on those streets of gold while making Johnie the happiest man in the world to have his cherished wife with him again. As a good friend said, “We cry not because she has passed, but because we miss her.”
