Obituary of Thomas Edwin Hawley

Thomas Edwin Hawley was born in Madill, Oklahoma on September 25, 1940 to parents George and Dorothy Hawley. He passed away at his home in Mounds on January 10, 2020. Thomas grew up in Madill and attended Madill High School along with siblings David, Mary, Kaye and Robert. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy and served for 4 years on the U.S.S. Constellation, serving during the Vietnam War. When he returned to civilian life, he attended a school of carpentry in Jackson, Mississippi. Thomas met Elaine Dempsey and the couple was married July 15, 1970. As a carpenter, Thomas did finish work, made furniture and cabinetry and he retired from the Carpenter’s Union. He and wife Elaine raised their family in a country setting, between Beggs and Mounds, where he enjoyed spending his spare time being outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He grew fruit trees, grapes, flowers and had very productive vegetable gardens, giving away much of the produce he raised. He enjoyed sing and picking on his guitar. He was a good-natured man who enjoyed joking and teasing, especially with his grandchildren. He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Elaine Hawley of the home; children Barry Ledford of Mounds, Teresa Leake and husband Kenneth of Sapulpa and Angela Jones and husband Curtis of Canton, MS; siblings David Hawley, Mary Burke, Kaye Hawley and Robert Hawley; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents George and Dorothy Hawley, maternal and paternal grandparents and son Larry Ledford. Services scheduled for Thursday, January 16, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. Pavillion at Oakwood Cemetery Mounds, Oklahoma. .
