John Bernard Surmont of Kiefer, Oklahoma, went to be with the Lord and Savior on Friday, October 27, 2023.  John was born on Friday, March 23, 1947 in LeMans Sarthe, France to parents Maurice Surmont and Solange Loriot-Surmont. 

John, who was known for his hardworking skills, started at age 14 washing dishes in restaurants in Le Mans, France. He wanted a better life for himself so at the age of 18 he came to the US on a work visa, and began cooking at a restaurant in Lafayette, LA.  Not knowing anyone or speaking any English he was determined to make it. The only way he could stay in the USA was by joining the U.S. Army in 1968, he was stationed at Fort Polk, LA.  While serving he took one tour in Vietnam. Upon his arrival home he proudly received his United States Citizenship May 1, 1969.

In 1967 while in Louisiana he met the love of his life Linda Rongey.  They married on November 8,1969 in Reno, Nevada. They celebrated 53 years together.  They were blessed with 2 wonderful children, Scott Edward in 1971 and Kristen Lou in 1974.

 John worked at several restaurants and hotels throughout his culinary career, working at Southern Hills, Excelsior Hotel, Camelot Hotel, Double Tree Hotel, Jarrett Farm and finishing his career at OSU-IT in Okmulgee, OK where he was a Culinary Arts Instructor for 22 years.  Serving on several boards and committees for the school.    

John is survived by his wife, Linda of the home. His son, Scott & Daughter-in-law Tasia Surmont of Oktaha.  Son-in-law Gary Hudson, grandchildren Gavin Hudson & wife Morgan Paige, Grayson Hudson & Addison Carr, all from Kiefer, OK.  Brody Surmont & Brynn Surmont of Oktaha, OK & great-grandchild Kannon Hudson, Kiefer, OK.  Sister-in-laws Joyce Rongey & Janette Rongey-Ashford, Brother-in-law Eddie & Tasha Rongey, Brothers-in-law Robert Atkins & Mike Shadowens as well as a host of loving nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his loving daughter Kristen Lou Hudson, his parents Maurice & Solange Surmont of France, brother-in-law Donald Ashford, father-in-law Ira Edward Rongey and mother-in-law Elva Lou Rongey, sister-in-law Mary Shadowens, all of Kiefer, OK, and sister-in-law Sharon Atkins of Newnan, GA.

Funeral Arrangements are in the care of Green Hill Funeral Home.
