Vern R. Hughes, 90, of Sapulpa, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 14, 2010; born June 8, 1920 in Sapulpa to Benjamin F. Hughes and Sarah E. Brock. He married Bertha (London) Ellis December 30, 1950, and was a devoted husband and father. A proud veteran, Vern served his country as a member of the United States Air Force during World War II in the Pacific theater. He was a Life Member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, and a founding member of Faith Baptist Church in Sapulpa. He was a lifelong diehard fan of the Oklahoma Sooners and a season ticket holder for many years. He is survived by sons V.R. Hughes of Cary, NC and James M. Ellis of Seattle, WA; grandchildren Erin Rucker of Cincinnati, OH, Shannon Massey of Tulsa, Anna McCall of Glenpool, Hayden Hughes of Cary, NC, Vanessa Kerstetter of Renton, WA, Eric Ellis of Lilliwaup, WA, Michael Ellis of Olympia, WA; and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; son Don Ellis; brothers Aaron, Leo and Bill; and sisters Vera, Colleen, Della and Nella. Service will be held Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 10 am at Faith Baptist Church with burial at Green Hill Memorial Gardens in Sapulpa. The Hughes family has entrusted the care of the services to the directors at Green Hill Funeral Home.
