Obituary of Benjy Dale Smith
Benjy Dale Smith was born on January 3, 1960 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Torchy Jane Wolfe. He passed away on November 3, 2024 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Additionally, Benjy was a devoted grandson, son, brother, and uncle. From the moment he first held his sister, Benjy, eleven years her senior, became her steadfast protector and guide through life’s milestones. Together, they shared countless memories—riding horses, buying her a three wheeler, going to the fair, listening to the soundtrack from Grease, and navigating everything from driving lessons to boyfriend advice. Benjy went above and beyond for his sister, even hauling his horse right into downtown Tulsa parking outside Don Jurick Studios so she could capture her senior portraits with his horse. Benjy provided his sister with a profound sense of security. Benjy’s support remained constant as she grew and became a mother herself. He was a devoted uncle to his niece, always present with love and support. He will always be the one walking his niece down the aisle. Benjy was generous and reliable, he left an unforgettable legacy of dedication to family.
Beyond everything he was to his family, Benjy also enjoyed a remarkable career and a magnetic popularity, especially during his days as a DJ. A self-taught and exceptionally talented artist, he pioneered his craft, setting standards that remain influential today. As Oklahoma’s top country and western DJ, Benjy was known across Tulsa, captivating audiences with his bigger-than-life smile, and his signature two-stepping and line dancing. He taught countless eager fans how to dance and how to be a real cowboy.
Benjy was a true icon—every girl wanted to catch his attention, and people were drawn to his energy and friendly personality. His charisma and charm filled the room, drawing people in wherever he played, and he became a familiar face and a local legend in the Tulsa music scene. This magnetic personality extended beyond the dance floor; his natural warmth earned him lifelong friendships and respect in every crowd he entertained.
Later, Benjy shifted gears into a career in law enforcement, serving with dedication at the Sheriff's Department and as Head of Security for Tulsa Public Schools. His expertise and leadership eventually led him to build his own successful security company. He was especially drawn to working with the youth during his time at Hale High School. He was loved by the students and they respected him. There, he was able to make the world a better place by imparting his wisdom on younger generations.
Beyond his career and family life, Benjy was an exceptional athlete, excelling in tennis, basketball, golf, and ping pong. Facing him in racquetball—or any sport, for that matter—almost guaranteed a loss. He had an incredible knack for any game, especially cards, thriving in every competitive situation. Winning just seemed to come naturally to him.
Benjy was the kind of person everyone knew or wanted to know. He didn’t see barriers—he found ways around them. Known for his wisdom and just the right words of comfort, advice, or guidance in any situation, he was a pillar in his community and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
As we remember Benjy, we see a man who lived fully—dedicated to his family, a loyal friend, and a source of joy to so many. He will always be cheering on Ty from the sidelines and watching over him and the rest of his family. We take comfort in knowing that Benjy is reunited with his beloved MomaJane in heaven, together again in peace. The bond they shared was unbreakable, and now they’re watching over us side by side. We love and miss you both so much.
A note below from his mother, Torchy Jane Wolfe - Please continue to check this website or email me at torchysclubs@gmail.com for information regarding the date and time of Benjy's Celebration of Life:
To my dear friends and family,
I am deeply moved by the outpouring of love you have shown during this difficult time. Every single comment, story, and personal message has provided me with comfort and strength. I want you all to know how much I value your words and condolences. Your offer of prayer especially lifts my spirit. I thank you all and I thank those of you who knew Benjy and have shared the experiences you had with him. What a driving force he was. He is truly loved and missed by many, and we are all trying to deal with this gigantic loss and void that remains without him here.
With all of that said, I also want to share an update about Benjy’s celebration of life. So many of you, including Benjy’s closest friends, have reached out wishing to speak and honor him. His celebration will take place in less than two weeks. There are many arrangements in progress, and this timing will allow us the necessary space to gather ourselves. I am planning to hold the gathering at my home in Sand Springs, OK—a place Benjy loved and where he spent countless hours with family and friends. I think he would be so proud to see everyone together in the place where he enjoyed his horses, enjoyed the sauna, played ping pong, billiards, and corn hole. For those of you who do not know, Benjy was the ping pong champ. He was so good at competitive sports, especially anything that involved racquets like tennis and racquet ball. Parking will be clearly marked with signs to guide you upon your arrival.
Again, I couldn’t navigate this without the overwhelming support and love from each of you. November 5th, 2024 was my first birthday in 64 years without my son, and your kindness has been a comfort beyond measure. Thank you, all of you, from the bottom of my heart. I will be in touch soon with further details.
